Bon Jovi, formed in New Jersey, debuted in 1984 with their album “Runaway”. The catchy melodies brought them immediate success in Japan as the band performed at “Super Rock 84” only three months since their debut. Their powerful stage captured the Japanese crowd where their career soon took off. The following year they released their second album “7800°Farenheit” and visited Japan once again. The large scale tour so rare for such a young artist was a huge success with every show sold out. The band’s popularity grew worldwide as they continued to tour. Then Bon Jovi went on to release the now classic “Slippery When Wet” which went on to become a megahit worldwide reining the US charts at number one for 8 weeks. Bon Jovi became one of the leading bands of the 80’s.
In September ’88 the band released the album “New Jersey” which went on to sell 8 million copies in the US alone, cementing their position as the new King of Rock. The singles “Bad Medicine” and “I’ll Be There For You” also reached no. 1 on the US charts. The band embarked on a now legendary tour playing such memorable shows as “The Final Countdown” at the Tokyo Dome and “Moscow Peace Music Festival” in Moscow. The tour took a toll on the band who were physically and mentally exhausted. However the band came back strongly in 1992 with “Keep the Faith”. As the title suggests the band came together and was powerfully rejuvenated once again. In 1994, 10 years after their debut, Bon Jovi released their greatest hits album, “Crossroads”. In 1995, they announced their world tour which began in Asia and Japan in April playing stadiums worldwide. In June they released the album “These Days” during the midst of the tour. The world tour lasted until the following year where each member moved on to focus on their solo efforts.
In May 2000, Bon Jovi broke the long silence with their 7th album “Crash”. The world tour opened in Japan where the fans were desperately awaiting their return. The hugely successful 4 Dome Japan tour captivated the entire nation. The band continued on with their world tour, and in March 2001 returned once again to Japan. The show featured an entirely different stage and setlist from the previous year. The world tour ended on a huge note playing to a hometown crowd of 70,000 people at Giants Stadium. During this tour in March they released the special Japan-edition greatest hits album, “TOKYO ROAD – Best of Bon Jovi” and in May the European live album, “ONE WILD NIGHT LIVE 1985-2001”.
In September 2002, the band released the album, “Bounds”, and on the day of the Japanese released played their first ever club show here at the ZEPP TOKYO. Their “Bounds World Tour” opened in Japan again to huge success, and the album went on to sell 3 million copies worldwide. In 2005, Bon Jovi released their 9th album, “Have a Nice Day” and toured Japan once again as part of the “Have A Nice Day Tour”. Ritchie Sambora broke his arm prior to the Japan tour, however played the 4 Dome, 6 show tour flawlessly. Again they closed out the tour with 3 days at Giants Stadium. They continued strongly with the release of “Lost Highway” paving a entirely new direction, recording in Nashville, the heart of country music. The “Lost Hightway Tour” started in New Jersey with ten shows at the Prudential Center. They played 4 Domes in Japan, and performed a total of 113 shows in 19 countries to 2,150,000 people, making it the number one tour of 2008.
In 2009, the band celebrated their 25th anniversary with the album, “The Circle”. The album topped the charts worldwide including the US and Canada. In Japan the album debuted at number one on the ORICON charts, making them the international act with the most number one albums, joining Simon & Garfunkel and Mariah Carey.
The band is in the midst of “The Circle Tour”. They are currently in the Europe where they sold out 12 shows at the O2 Arena in London. The tour will be their biggest ever with the band playing a total of 135 shows. And finally in November Bon Jovi will be returning to Japan! This time they will only be playing two shows at the Tokyo Dome! Tickets will obviously go fast. A quarter of a century since their debut, the band continues to open new doors, overcoming numerous challenges to great new glory. Bon Jovi has sold over 120 million albums, with over 2,600 performances in over 50 countries, drawing 34 million people to their shows. And now they sit alone a top the Rock World with their newfound glory that even their immense past accomplishments pale under.
