Jon Bon Jovi is spending his free time on the road helping to provide affordable housing for those in need. Below is an interview where he explains more. If you would like to help in the efforts please visit JBJ Soul Foundation

By GENE JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

SEATTLE – Jon Bon Jovi's new tour is bringing the veteran rock star to venues he doesn't usually visit on the road.

A shelter for hardcore alcoholics in Seattle. A tour of Skid Row in Los Angeles. Perhaps a squatters village in Sacramento.

That's because this tour in support of Bon Jovi's latest release, "The Circle," is also a fact-finding mission. The singer plans on visiting as many homeless shelters and programs as time allows in hopes of getting ideas and inspiration to shape his own work with the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, a Philadelphia-based charity that fights homelessness by building affordable housing, establishing community kitchens and cleaning up vacant lots in blighted neighborhoods.

"I've spent the last quarter of a century touring, going from arena-stadium to hotel back to arena-stadium-hotel," he says. "This time, because of my foundation's work over the last six years building affordable housing, on my days off and when the opportunity arises ... I will go do shelters and try to learn more about the issue and how to combat it."

Among those stops: Skid Row in Los Angeles early next month with Steve Lopez, the Los Angeles Times columnist who wrote "The Soloist," about a schizophrenic, homeless and wildly talented cellist named Nathaniel Ayers. The book was later made into a movie.

"Skid Row is an eye-opener," Lopez said in an e-mail. "I don't know Jon Bon Jovi, but I suspect he may come out of this with a keener sense of how many people are suffering in this economy, and of how many people on Skid Row are dealing with a combination of financial, physical and mental health issues, many of them veterans."

Such themes dovetail with the latest album, which features "Working for the Working Man" and other songs inspired by the economic meltdown and political turmoil around the world.

Before he kicked off the tour with two shows at Seattle's KeyArena last week, Bon Jovi toured one of the city's most well-recognized homelessness programs, a building run by the Downtown Emergency Service Center that provides homeless alcoholics, many of whom have serious mental illnesses, a place to live — and drink alcohol.

The program saves taxpayers more than $4 million a year in social service and jail costs and creates a safe atmosphere where residents may be more likely to get sober, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association last year.

Rocker, Philanthropist Is First to Take President’s Call to Service to Concert Venues Across the Country

Washington, DC – Jon Bon Jovi, in collaboration with the Corporation for National and Community Service, will be the first artist to take President Obama’s United We Serve initiative to a mass audience by bringing the message of service out on the road and engaging millions of fans on the band’s “The Circle World Tour.”

On Thursday, March 4 at the Staples Center, Bon Jovi will debut a concert video before a sold-out arena. In the video, which will be shown at each venue on the US-leg of the tour, Bon Jovi makes a call to service to millions of fans. Bon Jovi also headlined a 60-second television PSA that includes images of President and First Lady Michelle Obama serving and will be distributed nationally to broadcast stations and used in online promotions. Click here to view and download the video and PSA.

“Just as Jon Bon Jovi’s music moves millions around the world, his dedication to service will inspire even more to make a difference in their own communities,” said Patrick Corvington, the Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer. “This partnership is an amazing opportunity to encourage people from every corner of this country to take action and do their part to help those in need.”

Bon Jovi, a longtime service advocate and philanthropist, calls on Americans in the concert video and PSA to use their energy and passion to help tackle our nation’s challenges. As an individual who focuses his efforts on issues surrounding homelessness, Bon Jovi’s highlights what he calls the “power of we.” The video and PSA intersperse music from some of Bon Jovi's hit songs with a direct call to service. “The reality is – we’re all in this together. It’s time for you to raise your hand, go to Serve.gov and get involved in something you believe in.”

This is the first-ever collaboration of this scale and magnitude between the Corporation, the federal agency that leads the nation’s service sector, and a musical artist. The video and PSA featuring Bon Jovi are part of the Corporation’s broader campaign to encourage more Americans to volunteer through the United We Serve initiative. At the Corporation’s 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service, Bon Jovi and First Lady Michelle Obama launched the initiative with the Entertainment Industry Foundation before the largest gathering of volunteer and service leaders from nonprofit, government and corporate sectors.

In addition to the concert video, local volunteers with non-profit organizations and members of the Corporation’s service programs will distribute information about the United We Serve initiative and Bon Jovi’s Soul Foundation at booths inside concert venues in select cities. The volunteers will discuss how concertgoers can engage in service and find volunteer opportunities in their local community by visiting Serve.gov.

President Obama has made service a central cause of his administration. Since calling on Americans to serve in his inaugural address, the momentum for service has soared and support for the Corporation's service programs has skyrocketed – more than five million Americans volunteered with the Corporation in 2009, a 25 percent increase over the previous year. The United We Serve initiative challenges all Americans to help lay a new foundation for growth by engaging in sustained, meaningful community service to help meet our national priorities. The initiative has successfully bolstered civic engagement nationwide, helped to better our communities in priority issue areas, and leveraged partnerships with non-profits, U.S. corporations, and celebrities to foster a greater sense of purpose among Americans through service.

The Corporation for National and Community Service:
The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Obama's national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
Seattle, WA – February 19, 2010– As Bon Jovi prepares to spend much of the next two years on “The Circle Tour,” the GRAMMY Award-winning band announced that they would offer a free, live webcast of the first three songs of their North American tour launch on February 19, 2010 at Seattle’s KeyArena. By logging on to http://ustream.tv/BonJovi, www.BonJovi.com, or the Bon Jovi Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BonJovi, fans worldwide tuned in and rocked out along with the group and their sold-out Seattle audience, courtesy of a webcast powered by Ustream, the leader in live video. The stream gave fans a preview of what to expect as “The Circle Tour” gears up to perform 135 shows in 30 countries throughout 2010-2011.

The free tour launch webcast is just one of many digital online initiatives that Bon Jovi has planned to let fans share the limelight on “The Circle Tour.” The band has also unveiled a unique promotion for their latest single, “Superman Tonight,” in which fans are invited to create their own video for the song by using the innovative suite of tools available at Animoto. Entrants are encouraged to share their videos over social networks, with the most watched weekly winners receiving a Flip Camcorder and the overall contest winner receiving a signed Bon Jovi guitar. Users can just upload their photos and videos or import them through Facebook Connect, add text, pick a song and Animoto takes care of the rest creating a video with the visual energy of a music video. Bon Jovi fans can use the fast, free and easy site(http://www.bonjovi.com/supermantonight), which includes iPhone and Facebook apps, to create storylines and montages for “Superman Tonight.” The band’s official video version of the song premiered earlier this month on VEVO.com and VH1.

Bon Jovi is also using Twitter to engage their “circle” of fans. The band recently teamed up with innovative digital marketing agency Culture Jam Labs to use their new PromoJam technology. Entrants simply tweet to be instantly entered for a chance to win at: http://twitter.bonjovi.com/ The exceptional prizes include as: two tickets to see Bon Jovi live in concert at New Meadowlands Stadium and $1,000 to get there, two $100 gift certificates for bonjovi.com, two $50 gift certificates for bonjovi.com, and four signed copies of the new album.

Additionally, Bon Jovi announced that fans worldwide are invited to upload videos performing the band’s worldwide #1 song "Livin' On A Prayer" to http://prayer.bonjovi.com. The best performances from each city to be chosen and featured on the touring video system during the show, while the band is on stage playing the song. The official single winners in each market will also receive a deluxe prize package featuring a pair of tickets, an exclusive VIP messenger bag filled with limited edition tour souvenirs and other commemorative items. Recently, Bon Jovi played "Livin' On A Prayer" --the song voted by fans as the one they most wanted to hear at the GRAMMY Awards-- during their first ever performance on the telecast.

The band's 11th studio album, The Circle, was released in November 2009 and debuted at #1 in numerous countries, including the U.S., Canada and Japan.
